How to wear Autumnal florals

I adore this trend, simply because it makes me feel extremely ladylike (but not in the sense of Little Britain's Emily Howard 'I'm a laaaady!').  HOWEVER - as with certain trends, you have to be careful to avoid looking like a frumpster.  Especially if, like me, you are not blessed with gamine, slender, long limbs, and the gene pool has dealt you with a rather short, stocky build, and a rather large huge backside.

Autumnal florals are divine because they allow a smooth transition into the dark depths of winter, where darker colours rule.  Don't get me wrong - I love an all black ensemble, not least because it also cleverly disguises the vast amount of pounds that are looming to be distributed across my thighs come Christmas time - but for now, it is nice to make the most of still being able to wear florals.  Of course, these florals must be dark in theme - you can't just whack on an old summer dress and tights, because you'll look silly.

This gorgeous dress has a real Oriental feel to it, it is almost like a kimono.  It is also from M&S Limited Collection!  Even a year or so ago, I never would have ventured into M&S, deeming it the territory of the Jesus Sandal, but they really do have some gorgeous pieces that are reasonably priced.  This dress is £45, and my boots, also from M&S, are £55.

The stylish length is one that is below the knee - this adds a lovely folksy feel to the whole thing - think 'Autumn Bohemian'.  If not below the knee, it should be on the knee MAX. On no accounts should an autumnal floral dress sit above the knee around your arse - it just doesn't look good.  You're not 16 and trying to get into Mahiki without ID, girls.

Footwear is of utmost importance - a bad shoe and the whole look can be completely ruined.  For example, this dress, worn with ballet pumps (my pet peeve) would end up looking like you've borrowed your grandmother's curtains - frump city.  Knee high boots only! (and if you need some help in the height department like me, a small heel is preferable).

As for tights, while you can, go without.  When it gets too cold to bear the icy wind blowing up your skirt, get some sheer tights on - I'll be wearing this with 10 deniers.

Dress - M&S
